Drew Pendergast is 35 and works as a freelance editorial photographer based in Brooklyn, NY. He started picking up travel features as a side hustle in 2018, shooting for publications that sent him to cities he had never been to and expected him to know the good from the bad by Saturday afternoon. He started buying the recommended tours and passes the same way a regular visitor would. Some of them held up. A lot of them did not.
He went full-time in 2022. Since then he has tested tours, attraction passes, and hop-on-hop-off routes across 32 cities in the US, Europe, and Southeast Asia, always on his own schedule and his own card, not on a press trip. He measures by queue time, break-even math, and whether the guide actually knew the neighborhood or just knew the script. When a pass did not pay off, he writes that down too. Readers tend to trust the misses more than the wins.
Drew is not a travel agent or a tourism industry professional. He is a photographer who has been on the receiving end of a lot of tour itineraries, including the ones that wasted an afternoon and the ones that ended up being the reason the trip was good.
