How Tours and Passes Get Tested

Every tour, attraction pass, or hop-on-hop-off route covered on this site was booked on my own card and tested on my own schedule. No press trips, no media comps, no gifted access. The testing window is the same one any visitor has: whatever hours the attraction is open, whatever route the bus runs, the queue as it actually stands on that day of the week and month of the year.

What gets logged: queue time from arrival to entry, the gap between what a pass cost and what individual tickets would cost for the same stops, how much of the stated itinerary ran on schedule, and whether the guide could answer questions outside the prepared script. If a tour routed through a gift shop for forty minutes, that is in the notes. If a pass did not break even for the stops I actually made, I write the math out and say so.

Day-specific details get checked separately. Opening hours vary by day of the week. Some major venues close on Mondays. Hop-on-hop-off frequency in shoulder season is a different calculation than in peak: a circuit that runs every fifteen minutes in July may run every thirty or thirty-five minutes in October, which changes the realistic stop count for a half-day visit. These details are checked against the operator's current schedule before a post goes up.

Using What I Publish

Treat what I write as notes from someone who ran the itinerary, for whatever that is worth on your specific trip. The same tour runs differently on a Tuesday in November than on a Saturday in July. Schedules change, operators revise routes, ticket prices shift between seasons. Use the notes as a starting point, not a guarantee that conditions will match what I found on the day I tested.

Published posts get updated when things change. Readers catch things I miss. Leotis Chambers flagged a timing discrepancy in the Big Bus San Francisco route in a comment in 2023; the post was corrected that same week. Ignacio Sousa, a reader from Chicago, sent a detailed account of which parts of a Tokyo day-trip itinerary held up and where the guide failed; those notes went into the next revision. If you spot an error, a price that has changed, or a route that has been modified, the contact page is the fastest way to get it into the record.
